I pay a certain amount for web hosting each month, and I get a certain amount of bandwidth. If I exceed my bandwidth limit (perhaps too many people have visited my pages), then I have to pay more.

If people hotlink to my images, it means that my images appear on their site. Because they're hosted on my server, I pay for the bandwidth and not them. I hope that makes it clearer!
